Let's Talk Thursdays: About This Backwards Evolving Business ...
Hello Awesome Visitors! Welcome again to ...
Today's topic is:
Is there such a thing as evolving backward?
I do not believe there is such a thing, in reference to the physical structure of a person. It would be quite strange if all of us were cases of Benjamin Button.
To summarize this reference, it's the story of a man who as time passes gets younger instead of older. It is one of the better movies by Brad Pitt, so if you want to see an oldie but a goodie, I would highly recommend this one.
I do think that the concept of evolving in reverse, under the guise of regressed behaviors, is very possible. I'd like to present examples of this in a couple of my works, if I may.
Even if you didn't give permission, I was going to do so anyhow ... lol.
One which sticks out in my mind is Alan, Fay, and Demona. Alan is caught in a situation where a choice he's made is against what his family wanted, particularly his mother. When put in a position of pressure, standing his ground vs. succumbing, the choice he makes disrupts multiple parties. This domino effect drives Fay to perform an act that will probably be frowned upon some who read this work but understood by others.
Another example is my contribution to the Divergent Ink anthology collection, entitled "Onus". Although the main focus is on the plight of Cecilia Teflon, it's the actions of two other characters, Amber Moon and Geoff, that match the question's focus.
Although Amber Moon looks to have it all, she is plagued with an overactive mind and insecurity. This plague puts her in a precarious position, causing her regression in personal growth.
Geoff models himself as being the quintessential good guy. He's a believer of if you are good to a person, the person will do so in return. In thoughts and in actions. When he discovers information that runs contradictory to his vision, it alters Geoff's behavior in a negative way. Whether his response is truly a regression or justifiable I leave to the reader. Nevertheless, Geoff is never the same after this transpires.
In summary, it's the internal and external influences that dictate the evolvement of an individual. For some, the mind is his own worse enemy. For others, it's the company in which they keep.
